Mr. Smith began working for Seattle Stevedoring on a part-time basis while attending college. In 1962, after graduation from the University of Washington Law School, he joined Seattle Stevedoring as general counsel. In 1968, he was promoted to Vice President and subsequently to President in 1979.
Up until his retirement from active management in 1991 the company grew from a small regional stevedoring company to become the largest stevedoring and terminal company in the U.S. Mr. Smith is a past President of the National Association of Stevedores and a former Director of the Pacific Maritime Association.
In 1991, Mr. Smith assumed the role of Chairman of the Board for the company and President of Homeport Insurance Company.
