MIT Wins “Best Container Terminal” in the Caribbean

SEATTLE—Panama’s Manzanillo International Terminal was named the “Best Container Terminal” in the Caribbean by the Caribbean Shipping Association.  The announcement was made at the Association’s 34th annual banquet on October 19, 2004 in Catagena, Colombia.

The Caribbean Ports of the Year award recognizes those ports in the region that have achieved high levels of excellence in the delivery of sea port services, according to criteria approved by the General Council of the CSA.

MIT, an affiliate of SSA Marine, started operations on April 16, 1995 near the Atlantic opening of the Panama Canal immediately adjacent to the Colon Free Trade Zone (CFZ). MIT offers efficient and reliable port services to shipping lines transiting the Panama Canal or serving the Caribbean Region. Today MIT is both the largest and most productive transshipment facility in the Western Hemisphere handling over 1,400,000 TEU's per year and averaging over 40 moves per crane per hour.

This prestigious award, in conjunction with SSA Marine's first place Safety Award in the U.S. Coast Awards and their being voted "Best Overall Standards for Marine Terminal Operators" in Marine Digest's 2004 poll, continues to reinforce SSA Marine's ranking as the leader in terminal operating service providers.
