SSA Marine awarded port security grants for West Coast and Alaska operations

SEATTLE-SSA Marine has been awarded a $1.69 million government port security grant for the company's five West Coast container terminals, and a $250,000 grant for Southeast Stevedoring Corporation, an SSA Marine affiliate operating in Alaska.

Earlier today the Department of Homeland Security announced the Transportation Security Administration's Port Security grants totaling $170 million, to be distributed to terminal operators and ports across the country. The grants are part of broad measures to fund increased security initiatives at the nation's ports, which handle approximately 40 million containers every year.

"This is an important step for upgrading the security of our terminals, " notes Andy McLauchlan, senior vice president of SSA Marine. "As the country's largest marine terminal operator, SSA Marine takes seriously our responsibility to maintain the flow of commerce, while ensuring the safety and security of our workers and the community surrounding our terminals."

The company's grant will be allocated to upgrade physical security at Terminal 18, Seattle; Terminal 57-59, Oakland; and Terminal C-60, Pier A and Pacific Container Terminal, Long Beach. SSA Marine is the largest leaseholder of West Coast marine terminals. SE Stevedoring Corporation handles maritime services for passenger vessels, general cargo and containers throughout Alaska.
