SSA Marine Joins Smart and Secure Tradelanes Partnership

SSA Marine to Extend SST's Global Security Network for Cargo Containers Into Latin America and Inland Through Intermodal Rail Operations

WASHINGTON, DC and SEATTLE, Wash. - SSA Marine, with over 150 port operations and container handling facilities worldwide, today co-announced with the Strategic Council on Security Technology (SCST) its participation in Smart and Secure Tradelanes (SST), a rapidly expanding global security network for ocean container shipments. SSA Marine's century-long operational experience and global scope, especially in North America, Africa, Asia and Latin America, will help extend SST's reach and commitment to provide real-time visibility, automated tampering alerts and end-to-end audit trails of container shipments worldwide.

"As a world leader in cargo handling services and both port and rail terminal operations, SSA Marine brings significant depth and breadth to our initiative, especially in expanding the SST footprint to Latin America, along the West Coast and inland through their extensive intermodal rail networks. (SSA Marine and its affiliate Rail Management Services handles over 15 million containers (TEUs) and trailers annually through its marine and rail terminals worldwide). SSA Marine's participation is further validation of SST's strategy to improve end-to-end cargo container security and shipment efficiency through best-available partnerships, processes, and enabling technologies," said Gen. (Ret.) John Coburn, chairman of the Strategic Council on Security Technology (SCST). SCST is an advisory resource composed of international leaders committed to improving supply chain security and efficiency in cooperation with government agencies, and which helped launch SST last summer.

"We're proud and pleased to become a partner in Smart and Secure Tradelanes, which has quickly established itself as the most immediate, innovative and practical solution for improving cargo security and - significantly - maintaining the efficient flow of goods through clearance checkpoints from point of origin to final destination," said Jon Hemingway, SSA Marine's CEO and President. Hemingway added that initial infrastructure will be rolled out at SSA Marine terminal operations in the ports of Seattle, Long Beach and at SSA Marine's Manzanillo International Terminal on the Panama Canal, the largest container terminal in Central and Latin America.

The SST network infrastructure now includes port operations at about 15 of the world's busiest ports. SST leverages infrastructure and technology developed by Savi Technology in building the U.S. Government's Total Asset Visibility (TAV) network, which is the world's largest cargo tracking system using enterprise-class software linked with automatic identification technologies. As an SST participant, SSA Marine will be equipped with unique software that's integrated with best-of-breed, proven automatic identification technologies from multiple vendors, including bar codes, satellite tracking systems, sensors, and a variety of mechanical and electronic seals (E-Seals) that digitally lock the containers and transmit real-time alerts about tampering and other events over radio frequencies.

The SST network will use multiple wireless technologies that leverage a variety of frequencies, including 433.92 MHz - the standard frequency used by the global Total Asset Visibility network that's deployed to track shipments through over 700 nodes in 46 countries. The TAV network infrastructure, used by the U.S. government, was built by Savi Technology, an SST founding partner and leading provider of real-time solutions for supply chain security and asset management.

The global security network enables users to improve end-to-end security and efficiency of cargo container shipments and their contents through best-of-breed technologies, processes and personnel. The total solution, which incorporates linkages between software and automatic identification technologies, enables users to receive automated alerts on their computers, cell phones or other PDAs about key supply chain events or exceptions, such as security tampering, delays or mis-routes, and generate complete histories of a container's journey for follow up analysis and planning.

In addition, when interfaced with U.S. Customs electronic information systems, SST's global security network provides all shipment information required under U.S. Custom's 24-Hour Manifest Rule, and the open, flexible system has been designed to comply with other government programs, such as the Container Security Initiative (CSI), and Customs Trade Partnership Against Terrorism (C-TPAT).

To date, the SST consortium includes more than 60 partners, including the other world's leading port operators (ex. Hutchison Port Holdings, PSA Corp., and P&O Ports), shippers such as Target Corp. and service and solution providers, such as Savi Technology, QUALCOMM, SAIC, Parsons Brinckerhoff and Sandler, Travis Trade Advisory Services. SST's security network infrastructure has been installed and activated at more than a dozen major ports worldwide, which collectively account for about 65 percent of the containers shipped into the United States.

SST's capabilities, which provide real-time visibility; automated, non-intrusive tamper detection; and, complete audit trails of cargo containers from origin to destination, leverage infrastructure and technologies developed for the U.S. Department of Defense's Total Asset Visibility (TAV) network. TAV is the world's largest real-time cargo tracking network using active Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) systems linked with enterprise-class software.
