SSA Marine Takes the Lead in Vehicle Emissions Reduction

SEATTLE— SSA Marine announced substantial air emissions reductions from the container handling equipment used in its operations at Terminal A in the Port of Long Beach, California.

The engines of terminal tractors, used in its operations to transport containers at Terminal A, were converted from using diesel to LNG fuel.  The LNG-fueled tractors generated a 77% reduction in Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) emissions and a 93% reduction in Particulate Matter (PM), compared to the vehicle’s diesel counterpart.  The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency requires such emission levels by 2010, which SSA Marine could accomplish three years early by using the LNG-fueled vehicles.

SSA Marine’s Executive Vice President, Andy McLauchlan said, “the fuel conversion and resulting emissions reductions are working beyond our expectations.  We intend to convert the rest of our fleet starting in Southern California and moving to our other U.S. operations.”  Currently, SSA Marine’s facilities in Southern California use more than two million gallons of diesel annually.

Prometheus Energy Company is working with SSA Marine on equipment conversions and for the supplying of LNG fuel to reduce emissions and meet their ongoing commitment to improve air quality in the communities in which the company operates.

In 2006, SSA Marine received an “Air Quality Improvement Award” from the Port of Long Beach in recognition of outstanding efforts to reduce emissions from cargo handling equipment.
