SSA Marine Receives Environmental Excellence Award for Air Quality

SEATTLE — SSA Marine was presented the Environmental Excellence Award for Air Quality by the Association of Washington Business (AWB).  The award was in recognition of the leadership and voluntary commitments to improving air quality at SSA Marine’s Terminal 18 in the Port of Seattle.

The AWB panel of judges emphasized that the measures implemented by SSA Marine on a voluntary basis, demonstrate to the industry that the economic, health and environmental benefits outweigh the cost of implementation.  The company’s achievements can be used by other marine terminal operators to also effect change.

Among the initiatives  employed by SSA Marine are committing to the use of biodiesel  fuels, retrofitting yard equipment, installation of super capacitors on cranes to store mechanical energy, installation of automated truck gates, voluntary emission reductions above regulatory requirements, and participation in advocacy, awareness and education within the maritime industrial community and environmental leadership within the port community.

SSA Marine’s solutions show that environmental improvements can be achieved without compromising efficiency and cost effectiveness.  The company also partnered with the Port of Seattle to develop specific actions that reduced emissions off the terminal.

In the end, the solutions devised improved the environment while making good business sense.
